The Blog

An online diary of my everyday life featuring tips and tricks I've learned along the way.

This past week our oldest turned 21.  He celebrated at college during the week so he opted for a low key get-together with friends and family when he came home for the weekend.  I love to throw a party so I took the opportunity to go a little crazy with the party planning.  I searched Pinterest for 21st birthday ideas and went to town.  I thought I would share with you how my PINTEREST BOARD came to life.

I decided to go with foods made with various liquors.  I’m not condoning drinking.  I just had a little fun with the 21st birthday theme.  The best part was creating the dessert bar.  I started by making a batch of liquor lollipops.  Any liquor works.  I went with Amaretto and the were tasty!  The recipe can be found HERE.

Next up were Beer Mug Marshmallow Pops.  They weren’t perfect, but they still turned out cute.  The recipe can be found HERE.

Fireball Whiskey seems to be a college favorite so I had to make these homemade Fireball Marshmallows.  Recipe HERE.

It’s not a 21st birthday party without Rummy Bears.  Recipe HERE.

And finally, the cake.  I took the easy road and ordered an undecorated cake from Costco instead of making it from scratch.  Then I spiced it up a bit in a way only a 21 year old could appreciate.

There you have a dessert bar for a 21st birthday party.

I thought it would be best to have some food at the party.  I continued with the liquor theme.  It cooks out, right?

Whiskey Meatballs.  Recipe HERE.

Bourbon Lit’l Smokies.  Recipe HERE.

Bloody Mary Chipotle Shrimp.  Recipe HERE.

And Bourbon Chicken.  Recipe HERE.  I forgot to take a “real” pic but I did grab this pic for Snapchat.

I chronicled my party planning on Snapchat.  Follow along so you don’t miss out next time.  Search “thechristyB” on Snapchat.

Two things every college student likes:  pizza and money.  I think this might have been his favorite “food item” I made for the party.

As the guests arrived they are greeted with these fun Birthday Cake Shots.  Recipe HERE.

The birthday boy needed just the right attire for the occasion so I made him this t-shirt.

I’m sure a 21 year old guy could care less about having a “birthday party” but I had a blast planning it and am proud that he chose to have a gathering of family and friends over a night at the bars.

Shout out to the Holden High School boys basketball team as they begin play in the District Tournament today.  Best of luck to you!  I was honored to have been asked to photograph the seven seniors on the team for their senior banners earlier in the season.  I hope you enjoy every minute of these last games of your high school career and look back at your banners over the years and remember what great times they were.  Thank you for choosing Christy B Photography to help capture the memories!

Three things I love:  anything sweet, branding and photo sessions.  These Funfetti Gooey Butter Cookies tie all those things together.  Oh, and I love sprinkles, too.

Part of the Christy B experience are the fresh baked cookies for my clients when they come to the studio.  I like to find options that also match my branding.  I recently served these Funfetti Gooey Butter Cookies and ooooohhh they were yummy.   (I mean, I had to try them out to make sure they were ok before I served them to clients.)

You just might get to enjoy some if you book a Christy B photo session.  In the meantime, if you want to bake them on your own, you can find the recipe HERE.  Make sure not to over-bake them!  The second you think they might be done, take them out.  Otherwise they won’t be gooey and that’s what makes them so good.  Enjoy!

It’s Courtwarming at Pleasant Hill High School which means both the girls and boys teams will be in action at home tonight.  That makes it the perfect time to share this year’s senior basketball banners displayed in the high school gym.  Take it all in and enjoy every bit of the Courtwarming experience as seniors.  Best of luck tonight!  It was truly an honor to photograph this year’s senior basketball players!

So, you might have noticed Christy B was closed last week. That’s because my family was on VACATION! To celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary and our son’s 21st birthday, we went to Riviera Maya in Mexico and it’s glorious 80 degree weather in January. To say I overindulged in photos and video is an understatement. I don’t want to forget a moment.

Here’s a little 3-minute recap video of some of the fun we had. I find myself watching it over and over. Fun times we were blessed to share as a family before our kids leave the nest. NOTE: For a better quality video view it on Christy B Photography’s Facebook page.

A couple of my favorite images that I’m going to have printed for a collage on our walls.

We took a wild stab at a resort and chose Azul Sensatori. It was nice, almost too laid back with not much going on, but nice. The view of our resort from the beach.

This was our room. (Sorry, I wasn’t about to make the bed myself on vacation when I decided to take these pictures.)

The kids had a room right next to us. Same as ours only with two double beds. Funny thing: they did special towel designs for our anniversary & Logan’s birthday only they had our rooms switched & put the love birds with a rose petal heart in the kids’ room and put Logan’s birthday cake on our bed.

More images from around the resort (cell phone, GoPro & “real” camera photos mixed in).

On the rainy days, we ventured into Playa del Carmen and did a few excursions.  Unfortunately, our parasailing excursion (what I was looking forward to the most) was cancelled because of high winds.  The GoPro shots would have been amazing from up in the sky!  …next time

ATVs Through the Jungle

Our son really wanted to do this.  Not sure why because he’s had his own 4-wheeler since he was 4 years old.  But we were celebrating his birthday, so we did what he wanted.  It was raining off and on that day.  Let’s just say we were covered in mud (in the only tennis shoes we brought along) by the time we were done.

Zip Lines + Cave Snorkeling

On this excursion we zip lined into the water in a cave and then snorkeled through the cave.  We had to get into these wonderful rigs in our swimsuits.  It was dark in the cave so I really didn’t get any pics inside.  We swam through stalactites and stalagmites and saw a few small fish.

Here’s a little video if you would like to go on the zip line with me.

Jet Skis on the Ocean

Another thing our son has done a hundred times but still wanted to do.  To be honest, jet skis on the ocean (on a windy day) are way different than on a lake.  The waves don’t look near as big when you’re standing on the beach.  It’s an experience I’m glad to say I did and now I’m good from here on out.  Logan, on the other hand, can’t wait to do it again.  We are still kicking ourselves for not buying the CD of images they offered.  We have GoPro video but no good photos.  Photographer fail.

It was an awesome week full of wonderful memories with family.  We are so blessed to be able to allow our children to experience other parts of the world.  May they keep these memories in their hearts forever.

Mexico sunrise.

I tried to capture a time lapse of the sunset from our balcony but we only had 2 days of sun while we were there and the clouds rolled in just in time for the sunset each evening.  This was the best I could get.  I could still live with this.  Every.  Single.  Day.

Until next time, Mexico…
